Nigeria — Nigerian police fired tear gas on Thursday to break up several hundred protesters rallying against the cost of living in the northern city of Kano and in Abuja, AFP correspondents at the scene said.

In Kano, protesters tried to light bonfires outside the governor’s office and police responded with tear gas, driving many of the protesters back, an AFP reporter said. Police also fired tear gas on the outskirts of the capital Abuja.
