Croatia – A nine-year-old Czech child was killed in Croatia and three other people were injured when an incendiary device in their car exploded for unknown reasons, Croatian police said on Thursday.
All of the victims were Czech nationals travelling near the central coastal city of Zadar.
Police said the incident happened late on Wednesday and was triggered by an “unknown explosive device” stored in their vehicle.
“The car stopped at a layby after breaking down,” the authorities said.
The child was killed on the spot.
Two women, aged 49 and 34 years, and a 39-year-old man, were hospitalised in Zadar following the blast.
Police said an investigation into the cause of the explosion was ongoing.
“Czech diplomats in Croatia are in touch with the local police. As of now, we do not have verified information about the cause of the blast,” Czech foreign ministry spokesman Daniel Drake told AFP.
Famous for its picturesque beaches along the Adriatic Sea, Croatia attracts about 20 million visitors annually.
Nearly 800,000 Czech tourists visited Croatia last year.
