Durban — After a Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN) man allegedly killed his girlfriend and three-year-old son, the cause of death is allegedly linked to a WhatsApp voice note.
Mlondli Cele, 24, allegedly killed himself after killing his girlfriend, Bongeka Makhathini (21) and their son, Okuhle. He accused her of giving birth to a son that was not his and this led to the death of all of them, TimesLIVE reported.
Cele was found hanging in the lounge of his RDP house in Durban, while Makhathini’s body was found in the bedroom, with her son lying just metres away. Both of them were found with their throats slit.
Bheki Cele, Mlondi’s uncle and the former Minister of Police, said he received the news of his nephew’s death and revealed that Mlondi sent a voice note to another relative to inform them of his intention to kill himself.
“He told one of the relatives where we should find the keys to the house they were in,” said Cele.
Cele said Mlondi would succumb to his bad temper and often lash out. He was also unemployed, which may have been a cause of frustration.
“I am guessing it had been more than four or five months that he was out of a job. He used to work for someone who was contracted to the municipality,” said Cele.
Cele said the family were haunted by a trail of destruction after Mlondli’s father was also murdered three years ago.

“We just wish that he would have decided to kill only himself and not the other two innocent people,” said Cele.
He said they had also met the grieving Makhathini family, who were overcome with emotion when the bodies of the trio were being retrieved in the morning.
Cele said Mlondi had allegedly posted a picture of the man whom he suspected to be the real father of Okuhle. He also suspected the couple did not sleep as the bedding was neatly folded.
“When we got there, the blood was stale. I think since he sent the messages in the morning many thoughts were running through his head which resulted in him taking his own life,” Cele added.
Bongeka’s family said the incident has left them traumatised and it was difficult for them to place the blame on anyone as the person who allegedly committed the murder was not able to speak for himself.
“We are broken and we are hurt, and we are struggling to come to terms with the incident. Bongeka’s mom is grieving,” said Hlengiwe Makhathini, Bongeka’s aunt.
According to The Citizen, police are currently investigating the incident following the grim discovery of the set of bodies on Friday.
“When police arrived at the scene, the body of the woman and her child were found lying in a pool of blood with multiple stab wounds. The suspect was found hanging from the roof inside the house. Their identity documents were found placed on top of the bed,” KZN police spokesperson, Robert Netshiunda said.
