Cape Town – A heavily armed group allegedly attacked a cash truck on the N2 in eastern Cape and fled with an undisclosed amount of money, during a cash-in-transit heist on Monday.
The incident was captured on video by a teacher from a nearby school, reports said.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the group that fled in two getaway cars, a green Hyundai Tucson and a white BMW.
The dramatic incident allegedly happened in the morning on the N2 highway near the Tina Bridge.
According to DispatchLive, the four security guards were traveling from Qumbu to KwaBhaca when they received heavy gunshots from suspects in a green Hyundai and a white BMW.
Reports said that two of the four security guards ran when the cash truck was cornered to a stationary position, and the remaining guards were overpowered and robbed of their firearms.
National police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the suspects blew open the safe and took an undisclosed amount of money before speeding off the scene, reported News24.
“No one was reported injured and anyone with information regarding the suspects’ whereabouts is urged to contact the nearest police station, call the police’s Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or leave a tip-off on the MySAPS App,” the report quoted Netshiunda as saying.
