Cape Town – Traffic police reportedly arrested a 41-year-old man for driving a silver Mercedes Benz G63 at 215km/h on the N1 south highway in Gauteng over the weekend.
Gauteng traffic police department spokesperson, Sello Maremane, said the driver was detained at the Sinoville police station in Pretoria.
The driver claimed he was running away from hijackers, News24 quoted Maremane as saying.
Maremane said several other speeders aged between 32 and 60 were detained at various police stations this weekend alone and were set to appear at various courts facing charges of reckless and negligence driving, as they exceeded the prescribed maximum limit of 120km/h on a freeway.

A report by BusinessTech indicated that Gauteng traffic police had noticed an increase in speeding-related arrests since the use of new technologies – including Moving Violation Recorders (MVR).
The device records the average speed measured over a minimum of 500 metres, then downloads the incident for further investigation and prosecution, the report said.
According to the report, Maremane said: “Excessive speeding significantly contributes to the high number of road fatalities in the province. We call upon drivers to adhere to the general speed limit on Gauteng major routes in order to save lives.”
He said the unit would continue to conduct high-speed operations and arrest drivers who endanger the lives of road users.
