Cape Town – Eswatini referee, Mbongeni Shongwe found himself in a dire situation, having to run for dear life in order to escape enraged Mbabane Highlanders fans who stormed onto the field in pursuit of him.
The Premier League of Eswatini, also known as the MTN Premier League due to sponsorship reasons, is the top division of the Eswatini Football Association.
The league is one of the few domestic leagues not taking a break as the FIFA World Cup 2022 is underway in Qatar.
According to @FARPostZA, Highlanders fans were unhappy after a Manzini Seabirds player seemed to have used his hand to score the winning goal. Seabirds ended up winning the tie 2-1.
In the video, the screams of frustrated fans can be heard as they pursued the almost helpless referee who had to find refuge in a police vehicle. The fans attacked like an army and proved to be a handful for security and police to attempt to deal with.
