Cape Town – A flu outbreak affected a number of Mamelodi Sundowns soccer players ahead of their DStv Premiership match against the Royal AM, the club confirmed on Monday.
According to Soccer Laduma, the DStv Premiership clash between Royal AM and Mamelodi Sundowns was supposed to take place on Saturday at Chatsworth Stadium, KwaZulu-Natal, however, it was called off due to bad weather.
It was then rescheduled to take place on Monday at 15:00.
Sundowns issued a statement shortly before the game, saying that several team members were sick with flu.

“Following the postponement of Mamelodi Sundowns DSTV Premiership match at Chatsworth Stadium due to rain, the Club has experienced an outbreak flu which has affected the majority of its players. Considering the symptoms, which are of a respiratory nature and affect almost the entire squad, the club is ensuring that all the necessary steps are taken to safeguard the players and everyone that they interact with on-and-off the field.
“The club is committed to fielding its strongest available team this afternoon as it closes out the 2021/22 DSTV Premiership,” said the club.
The affected members included Reyaad Pieterse, Denis Onyango, Thapelo Morena, Brian Onyango, Rushine de Reuck, Themba Zwane, Lesedi Kapinga, Lebohang Maboe, Andile Jali, Surprise Ralani, George Maluleka, Promise Mkhuma, Rivaldo Coetzee, Haashim Domingo, Pavol Safranko, Gift Motupa and Kermit Erasmus, Soccer Laduma reported.
