Cape Town β The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) announced that it would broadcast the highly-anticipated Rugby Championship game between South Africa and New Zealand.
Just one week after Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie announced that a deal was struck between SuperSport and SABC, the news was made official just 24 hours ahead of the game.
In a statement, the SABC said it had reached a once-off agreement to mark the landmark game which takes place on Saturday 31 August 2024 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg.
SuperSport and SA Rugby expressed their joy at the decision to include all South Africans in the historic moment, as a celebration of democracy and a celebration of social unity.
“We want to express our heartfelt appreciation to SuperSport for collaborating with the SABC, which allows all South Africans to be a part of this historic event,β Mark Alexander, SARU President, said.

SuperSport CEO, Rendani Ramovha, said after discussions with SARU and McKenzie, it agreed it was fitting that they partnered with SABC to celebrate 30 years of democracy and showcase the game.
SABC CEO, Nomsa Chabeli, said the public broadcaster has played a big role in the success story of the Springboks so far and was happy that it could fulfil tis commitment to providing universal access to sports of national interest and enabling South African citizens to enjoy and be part of the national moments,” she said.
Minister McKenzie said the match on Saturday is a “bi-product” of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and was happy that all parties could come together to reach an agreement, Newzroom Afrika reported.
“To SuperSport, thank you for not being arrogant. Thank you for approaching this negotiations in a manner of nation-building and understanding,” he said.
He thanked Chabeli and SARU for the work they have done to make all South Africans feel inclusive.
