Cape Town — South African billionaire Patrice Motsepe (63) was re-elected unopposed as the Confedration fo African Football (CAF) president for his second term in office.
Motsepe has been CAF President since 2021 and announced in October 2024 that he would be running for president again. He was re-elected for another four-year reign during the CAF extraordinary General Assembly in Cairo on Wednesday, BBC News reported.
Motsepe said he was looking to continue the good progress he’d made during his first tenure, and his election was guaranteed after he was the only contender to run for office.
Motsepe’s tenure started at a time of crisis after he succeeded Ahmad of Madagascar in 2021 who become the first CAF President to be banned by FIFA.

Under Motsepe’s leadership, CAF has grown financially and made a $72 million profit (R1.3 billion) during the 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), 18 times greater than the 2022 edition.
Motsepe said there was still a lot of work to be done, and he highlighted national stadiums in Africa as a particular point of focus.
“In 2021, there were 36 countries that were not playing football in their countries. The number has come down to 12, but for us, this is still a big number,” he said.
“At Caf and Fifa, it is our job to continue supporting the development of sports infrastructure,” he added.
Motsepe said it was an honour and privilege to be re-elected, and he was grateful for the chance to lead Africa’s football governing body.
“This is about Africa, this is about the people of this continent, and it has been a huge privilege for me to get exposed to every one of you because you represent the very best of the continent and the world,” he said.
