Cape Town – A petition by French football fans for their national team to play Argentina in a replay of the FIFA World Cup 2022 final has gained momentum, collecting over 200 000 signatures.
The French have not taken kindly to the result that saw Argentina lift their third World Cup title and Lionel Messi cement his position as one of the greatest football players the world has ever seen.
The South American country beat France 4-2 on penalties after an enthralling 120 minutes of open play that ended all square at 3-3.
French fans have argued that the penalty awarded to Angel Di Maria after he was brought down by Ousmane Dembele was the incorrect decision.
“L’arbitrage était totalement vendu, il n’y a jamais eu pénalty + faute sur MBAPPE sur le 2ème but [The arbitration was totally sold, there was never a penalty + fault on MBAPPE on the 2nd goal],” the creators of the petition wrote.
At the time of writing, the petition has over 220 000 signatures.

At the time of writing, the petition has garnered over 660 000 petitions.
“Desde que les ganamos la final del mundial de fútbol los franceses no paran de llorar, quejarse y no aceptan que Argentina es el campeón del mundo [Since we won the World Cup final, the French have not stopped crying, complaining and do not accept that Argentina is the world champion],” wrote Valentin Gomez who started the petition.
“Esta petición es para que los franceses dejen de llorar y acepten que Messi es el mejor de la historia del fútbol y tiene de hijo a Mbappé.
[This request is for the French to stop crying and accept that Messi is the best in the history of football and has Mbappé as his son.]”
