Paris – Two-time African Footballer of the Year Mohamed Salah was back to his predatory best at the weekend, notching both of Liverpool’s goals as they won 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.
A slow start to the campaign by the Egyptian contributed to the poor form of the Reds, but the 30-year-old has now scored 10 goals in his last 10 games.
Other Africans among the goals included Victor Osimhen for Napoli and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting for Bayern Munich.
Here, AFP Sport highlights African headline-makers in the major European leagues:
ENGLAND
MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)
Salah struck twice in the first half to earn Liverpool a first away Premier League win of the season. He coolly slotted past Hugo Lloris then pounced on an Eric Dier error to chip over the French goalkeeper.
WILFRIED ZAHA (Crystal Palace)
Zaha scored and set up Michael Olise’s stoppage-time winner as Palace came from behind to win 2-1 at West Ham. The Ivorian winger expressed his dismay before the kick-off at the thought of turning 30 later this week, but he retains a rapid turn of speed and took his chance to smash in his sixth goal in 12 games this season.
YOANE WISSA (Brentford)
Wissa stepped up for Brentford in the absence of the suspended Ivan Toney by winning a penalty and scoring his side’s second goal in a 2-2 draw at Nottingham Forest. There was controversy over the spot-kick as a VAR review deemed Dean Henderson’s slight touch on the Democratic Republic of Congo international enough for a penalty. Wissa then got the better of Henderson once more with a delicate chip over the on-loan Manchester United goalkeeper for his third goal of the season.
ITALY
VICTOR OSIMHEN (Napoli)
Osimhen is alone at the top of the scoring charts in Italy with eight goals after another match-winning performance from the Nigeria striker, this time in Napoli’s 2-1 victory at Atalanta, which extended their league lead to six points. After giving away the penalty that was converted by another Nigerian international, Ademola Lookman, to open the scoring for the hosts, the 23-year-old headed his team level before providing the pass from which Eljif Elmas netted Napoli’s winner.
GERMANY
ERIC MAXIM CHOUPO-MOTING (Bayern Munich)
Bayern forward Choupo-Moting continued his rich scoring form by picking up two crucial goals in his side’s 3-2 win at Hertha Berlin, bringing his recent total to 10 goals in his last 10 games. The Hamburg-born Cameroon striker scored twice in two minutes during the first half in the German capital, with the second goal going in off his shin. Choupo-Moting, whose contract expires at the end of the season, may have done most of his talking on the pitch, but after the game he sent a verbal message to the Bayern hierarchy, saying he “feels happy” in Munich and “could imagine staying here longer”.
SADIO MANE (Bayern Munich)
Content to let Choupo-Moting continue his hot streak, Mane had a quiet game by his standards against Hertha, but was still responsible for setting up German teenager Jamal Musiala’s opening goal with a deft cross after just 12 minutes. Mane, who will line up for Senegal in their first World Cup fixture against the Netherlands on November 21, now has three assists to go with his six goals this season.
