Cape Town – The City of Cape Town is preventing litter and pollution from flowing into the Rietvlei wetland through a R87.5 million upgrade of the Bayside Canal in Table View, Western Cape.
The project, overseen by the Water and Sanitation department, includes measures to improve stormwater quality flowing into the Rietvlei and to facilitate future maintenance of the canal.
Councillor Zahid Badroodien emphasised that the primary goal of the project is to enhance the capacity of the canal.
“The aim of this upgrade is threefold: to increase the capacity of the Bayside Canal; to provide naturally structured treatment facilities which improve the quality of stormwater runoff […] and to provide adequate access for systematic maintenance in the future.” he said
These measures involve lining canal slopes, installing litter booms and constructing sedimentation ponds and treatment channels, as reported by Engineering News.
According to Capetownetc, the Bayside Canal upgrade will take place with minimal disruption to nearby water bodies and ecosystems.
The upgrade is set for completion by mid-June 2025.
