Cape Town — Former interim President, Kgalema Motlanthe, has said Jacob Zuma’s departure from the African National Congress (ANC) is a blessing in disguise for the party.
Motlanthe, who took over as interim president between Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma’s reigns, has been a staunch ANC servant. He said Zuma’s departure means he has now essentially expelled himself from the party and said the party can now only move forward and pursue its renewal programme, eNCA reported.
“It is true that he remains a member of the African National Congress. In terms of the provisions of the ANC constitution, he has effectively expelled himself from the ANC. The ANC should really be grateful that he has done them a great favour. Actually his departure is a blessing in disguise because the ANC can now, in earnest, pursue its renewal,” Motlanthe said.

When asked why Zuma has not faced a disciplinary hearing, he added that the leadership of the party is of the view that they need to follow fair procedures in bringing finality to that aspect. The ANC constitution is clear that no one else can belong to any other party. Motlanthe was asked whether he was disappointed with Zuma’s decision.
“I’ve known Jacob Zuma for many many years, I met him in the underground and I’ve known him for years, and the reality for each one of us, is we write our reality with the choices we make,” he concluded.
