Cape Town – MK Party MP Mzwanele Manyi has dismissed EFF leader Julius Malema’s threats to attach former president Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla home over “unpaid legal fees”.
Malema, citing a court order, claimed his lawyers would take legal action to recover the money, including targeting Nkandla.
Speaking outside the Constitutional Court on Tuesday last week, Malema accused Zuma of failing to comply with court orders to settle debts from previous legal battles, including a case where the EFF compelled Zuma to repay funds for Nkandla upgrades.
He warned Zuma to pay by Wednesday or risk losing his home.
“All the cases we won against Jacob Zuma, he never paid the legal fees. Zuma owes us legal fees. We have a court order that he must pay us our money. He has not complied with the court order,” Malema said.
He added: “We have instructed our lawyer to attach Nkandla so that the man pays back the money. We want our money. He wants to play dirty, bring it on, bring us our money tomorrow [Wednesday] otherwise we are attaching Nkandla.”
The dispute came amid tensions between the EFF and the MK Party, as several former EFF members defected to the MK party.
Speaking at the MKP’s anniversary celebration in Vosloorus on Saturday, Manyi expressed confidence that Zuma’s residence, located on Ingonyama Trust land, was legally unattachable as it was not private property.
He downplayed the EFF’s anger, attributing it to disappointment over losing members to the MKP and urging for calm.
“We note that things were said in anger and we have no issue with that. When people are angry and disappointed, they will say a lot of things. We accept it, we are grown-ups in the MK Party. We can see when young people are unhappy with something and say whatever they want to say. We support that they vent out the anger, but we hope that with time, that anger will die down,” said Manyi.
