CapeTown – DA federal chairperson Helen Zille has warned that if her party exits the government of national unity (GNU), South Africa could face instability due to a potential coalition between the ANC, EFF, and MK Party.
She claimed such a coalition, allegedly supported by Deputy President Paul Mashatile, would devastate the economy within a week.
In an interview on FaceTheNation, Zille argued that the country would face international disinvestment, expulsion from AGOA, and economic collapse without the DA in the GNU.
“If we go out of the GNU, you will have either a minority government which will be totally unstable or you will have an ANC, EFF, MK coalition, which is what Paul Mashatile wants, which will destroy South Africa’s economy within a week.
“The amount of disinvestment, international revision of the approach to South Africa, we will be kicked out of AGOA as well, we must understand the stakes here,” Zille said.
Her comments followed ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula’s challenge for the DA to leave, accusing Zille of undermining the ANC and the GNU.
While Zille described the GNU as a grand coalition between the ANC and DA, the ANC dismissed this as false.
The DA opposes the inclusion of the EFF and MKP in governance, labelling them as unfit and harmful to the country’s economic future.
Despite months of survival, the GNU has shown signs of division over policies like the National Health Insurance (NHI) and the Bela Act.
