Cape Town – Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party parliamentary leader John Hlophe says his party remains firm on the fight for land and advocates for the Africanisation of the country’s laws to support this cause.
After boycotting the initial swearing-in ceremony, Hlophe and the party’s 58 members took their oath in Parliament on Tuesday.
Hlophe, a former judge, emphasised that the party aims to avoid petty politics and is prepared to work with parties like the EFF and ATM, with EFF leader Julius Malema offering guidance.
“We have come here to come and work. We have been elected and we will do our best to stay above petty politics. We are not here to be petty, we are here to work because we have been elected by the people of this country.

“We consider that to be our role and we are going to engage in very robust debate, but in a respectful manner. But, please make no mistake, we are not going to allow ourselves to be bullied by anyone. We know our rights, we are adults, we know why we are here,” Hlophe said.

The party’s primary focus will be on securing land for the landless, rejecting the notion of private ownership of land in Africa.
“The land in Africa can never be the subject of private ownership, the land belongs to the nation, it does not form part of private ownership.”
Hlophe also noted that their participation in Parliament does not mean they are dropping legal challenges against the recent election results.
