Cape Town – EFF leader Julius Malema has asserted that prisoners in South Africa enjoy better living conditions than the country’s poorest citizens.
Speaking at a community gathering in Reiger Park, East of Johannesburg, over the weekend, Malema highlighted the disparity, noting access to basic amenities like flushing toilets in prisons compared to the lack thereof for some in society.
“In prison, there is a flushing toilet. You are not in prison but you don’t have a flushing toilet. Your situation is worse than those in prison, and yet you are not in prison,” Malema said.

He urged supporters to advocate for their rights, saying that prisoners shouldn’t have superior rights to citizens, particularly children.
“Let us go and reclaim our rights because prisoners can’t have more rights than our children,” Malema said.
Malema further advocated for free education and increased grants for children, emphasising the importance of addressing poverty to prevent future societal issues.
He reiterated his commitment to raising child support grants and other social grants to alleviate poverty and its potential consequences.
