Cape Town – Politicians across South Africa are turning to divine intervention in the run-up to the national and provincial elections slated for May 29.
With expectations of the most fiercely contested polls since the dawn of democracy, leaders are urging congregants to pray for a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process.
Speaking at the Esikhawini TVET College in Richards Bay on Easter Sunday, African National Congress (ANC) Secretary General Fikile Mbalula emphasised the significance of spiritual guidance in the political landscape.
Mbalula described the ANC’s commitment to what he termed the “reconstruction and development programme of the soul”, asserting the party’s roots within the church and its ongoing support for religious institutions.

However, Mbalula also acknowledged the imperfections of political leaders, saying that the ANC recognises their fallibility and the importance of spiritual enrichment.
“‘We recognise as the ANC that leaders are not pure. They too need to be enriched, their souls and all of that because they too can make mistakes. Therefore that is why we place the church at the centre of the work that we do,” The Citizen quoted him as saying.
He reiterated the centrality of the church in the party’s work beyond the elections.
Meanwhile, the EFF leader Julius Malema trended on social media on Sunday as he and his wife attended the Easter church service at St Engenas Zion Christian Church (ZCC) in Moria.
