Cape Town – Former ANC president Thabo Mbeki on Thursday visited Soweto to rally support for the ruling party ahead of the May 29 elections.
Engaging with locals at Jabulani Mall, Mbeki emphasised the importance of returning the ANC to power while acknowledging the challenges facing both the country and the party itself, The Citizen reported.
“I think it is important that we indeed return the ANC to power. I know there are many problems in the county and within the ANC, and so as we say ‘vote for the ANC’, we are also making a commitment to the people that we will attend to the problems within the ANC to make sure that it is able to discharge its responsibilities to the population,” the report quoted him as saying.

According to eNCA, Mbeki also highlighted the importance of the ANC resolving its internal issues first.
He acknowledged the significant electoral challenge facing the party, which has experienced a decline in support over the past 30 years, potentially jeopardising its parliamentary majority.
