Cape Town – Former ANC president Thabo Mbeki has voiced support for his party’s handling of the dispute with former leader Jacob Zuma, who now heads the Umkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
Mbeki commended the ANC’s adherence to its constitution in addressing Zuma’s suspension.
Zuma was suspended in January for breaching rule 25.60 of the ANC’s constitution following his public declaration on December 16 that he would not support or campaign for the ruling party. Instead, he pledged his endorsement to the MKP in the 2024 polls.
“The position by the leadership and I think they are right about it. There are certain set procedures in the constitution of the ANC as to how you expel a member that is necessary for it to respect that constitution so that it does not behave in a lawless manner.

“Therefore, the decision to take him to the disciplinary committee. That is in the constitution,” he said.
He said this during a campaign event in Soweto, Johannesburg,
Mbeki also emphasised the importance of returning the ANC to power while acknowledging the challenges facing both the country and the party itself, The Citizen reported.
“I think it is important that we indeed return the ANC to power. I know there are many problems in the county and within the ANC, and so as we say ‘vote for the ANC’, we are also making a commitment to the people that we will attend to the problems within the ANC to make sure that it is able to discharge its responsibilities to the population,” he said, according to the report.
