Cape Town — Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema, said his party has come under threat of disruption for the first time since its inception in 2013.
Malema was addressing crowds of EFF supporters at the 3rd National People’s Assembly (NPA) that was conducted under the theme of “Defend, Rebuild And Advance the Struggle for Economic Freedom.” The party sought to reflect on the party’s performance in the past five years.
The NPA started on Thursday 12 December and is set to run until Sunday 15 December.
“For the first time, the revolution is under a genuine threat of disruption that risks delaying our freedom for many generations to come. We have the duty to defend the gains of our emancipation movement and the ideas of the revolution from distortion and sabotage because attempts to destroy the EFF will set the freedom of our people back for another 100 years. The EFF remains the most potent and viable weapon for the liberation of African people…” Malema said.

He said the NPA was the “highest demonstration of democracy” within the party, and was important to determine the direction of the EFF. He acknowledged the party’s poor performances in the 2024 general elections, and said it marked the first electoral decline amid levels of sabotage and infiltration.
The party suffered big losses in 2024 after Floyd Shivambu, Dali Mpofu and Busisiwe Mkhwebane defected to Jacob ZUma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party.
The EFF won only 9.52% of the votes during the 2024 elections, finishing 4th at the polls and being trumped by MK.
