Cape Town — Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader, Mmusi Maimane, has urged President Cyril Ramaphosa to be a strong and decisive leader in the new era of the Government of National Unity (GNU).
Maimane indicated recently that his new party was not ready to join the GNU just yet and that the party is still weighing its options. He said he wants to see what Ramaphosa and the GNU will do when it comes to the challenges outlined, including education and the economy.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Maimane emphasised the importance of South Africa fulfilling its promises and forming a government coalition. He said that allowing the state to operate independently is crucial for the coalition’s success. The real test, he noted, will be in observing the ANC’s behaviour following the inauguration.
“My message to President Ramaphosa is that this is the time to be strong, not to be consensus-seeking all the time. This is the time to be decisive in action, because this is his last ter. I pray that he has the decision-making capability, the resolute vision and the execution to go with it. If we get those things right, we can achieve a society we want,” Maimane said.
“I think when you have strong leadership, people follow but if you’re seeking consensus and your priority is to keep the GNU together, it will fall apart anyway because there’s no glue holding people together,” he added.
