Cape Town — Former Johannesburg mayor, Kabelo Gwamanda, has spoken out following his arrest for an alleged fraud scheme where he defunded people of funeral policies.
Gwamanda was released on bail following his arrest.
He has since spoken out on his arrest and addressed the issues in a video he upl to X.
In the video, Gwamanda first addresses the severe weather in Johannesburg and urges residents to remain cautious as heavy weather affects the province.
As the video continues, he is being interviewed by a woman who cannot be seen.
“We were told you were arrested?,” the woman asks him.
He responds: “You know, in South Africa as a country, growing up black, it’s a possibility that none of us can avoid, so regardless of the path you choose, whether to serve or to engage in nefarious activities. The fact of the matter is that the relationship that South Africans have with law enforcement is a relationship that needs to be worked on very strongly, so that we understand what each of our roles are in this undertaking.
“But I am here at home. I cannot swim, there is a storm coming in the City of Johannesburg. Thank you very much.”

Meawhile, in a fiery interview with eNCA, Al Jama-ah leader, Ganief Hendricks refused to address the issue regarding the Gwamanda situation.
He was allegedly on air to discuss the first 100 days of the Government of National Unity (GNU) and his role as the Deputy Minister of Social Development.
When he was asked to put on his hat as Al Jama-ah leader, Hendricks got defensive and immediately tried to end the conversation,
“No I’m not wearing any different hats, I’m here as the Deputy Minister. You can ask me in another programme,” Hendricks said. When the interviewer tried to get him to comment on the situation, Hendricks said it was a form of “ambush interviewing.”
“You asked me to speak about 100 days. When you want to speak to me as President (of Al Jama-ah) you contact my office and we will have an interview. I am speaking now as Deputy Minister of Social Development, don’t ask me about party matters now,” he said.
