Cape Town – A heated exchange took place in Parliament between Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie and EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi during the debate on President Cyril Ramaphosa’s address on Friday.
The confrontation began when McKenzie responded to uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party chief whip John Hlophe’s comments on Roman-Dutch law.
McKenzie criticised Ndlozi for challenging his claim about a sovereign wealth fund, calling him “uninformed” and referring to him as an “ice boy”.
During the debate, the minister said he would assist criminals sentenced by impeached Western Cape High Court judge Hlophe in appealing their sentences. The EFF rebutted, saying McKenzie was uninformed about Hlophe’s views on decolonising the law. Tensions escalated when McKenzie claimed the country had a sovereign wealth fund, prompting EFF MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi to accuse him of misleading Parliament.

“A government minister cannot deliberately mislead the house. There is no sovereign wealth fund in this country. You must withdraw, there is no such a thing. At this stage where you are, is not those talks by the streets you are having. You must speak facts on behalf of the government… Take us seriously,” Ndlozi said.
McKenzie retaliated by mocking Ndlozi’s focus on education and calling him an “ice boy”.
“You always talk about education, honourable Ndlozi. Your peers are delivering papers while you are ice boy here being sent around, you must not come to me. Don’t tell me about education.”
McKenzie also accused Hlophe of hypocrisy for previously using Roman-Dutch law as a judge while now criticising it.
