Cape Town – South Africa’s deputy president David Mabuza was among presidential dignitaries and presidents who attended the inauguration of president-elect, William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua on Tuesday.
The presidency confirmed Mabuza’s attendance in a statement on Twitter on Monday.
Ruto was sworn in as Kenya’s fifth post-independent president in a ceremony held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi.
The 60 000-seat stadium was filled to capacity, as Kenyans hoped to witness the inauguration.
This was after the Supreme Court threw out presidential hopeful, Raila Odinga’s lawsuit challenging the vote result.
According to the statement, Ruto had invited President Cyril Ramaphosa who, however, delegated his deputy to represent him and the country at the inauguration.

South Africa and Kenya enjoy strong bilateral relations, which are mutually beneficial and underpinned by common values and principles, the statement said.
The inauguration came after Kenya’s peaceful national elections held on August 9 where Ruto emerged victorious, scoring the majority of the votes.

The inauguration was celebrated by many Kenyans.
Those who didn’t make it to the stadium got a chance to wave and cheer their new President as his convoy droves on the streets of Kenya with Ruto waving at his people.
