Cape Town — Advocate Dali Mpofu is the latest prominent figure to leave the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), announcing he has joined the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
Following in the footsteps of Floyd Shivambu and Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Mpofu’s departure reflects ongoing shifts among high-profile EFF members towards the Zuma-led MK Party.
In an exclusive interview with SABC News, Mpofu discussed his reasons for the move.
“After a lot of soul searching, I’ve taken a decision that I will be joining MK. I’m joining MK because I believe that is the vehicle through which we will achieve the much-needed black and progressive unity so I’m doing so not necessarily to reject any other organisation but at this point in time, in November 2024, I am of the view that the vehicle through which we should drive that unity is uMkhonto we Sizwe,” he said.
He added that he had not yet spoken to EFF leader, Julius Malema, as he felt there was no need to explain his actions but, as a courtesy, he would inform of his decision after his announcement. Mpofu added that there was nothing personal in his decision, nor did he do so to go against any particular person.
“It’s something I’m doing for my people,” he said.
Mpofu also claimed that he was involved in the creation of the MK Party in 2022 following Cyril Ramaphosa’s election as ANC President. He revealed that he chaired engagement with leaders of the UDM, PAC, ATM and EFF, while he also held covert discussions with Jacob Zuma.
“There was a time when former President Zuma and I were the only people who knew about this project of the formation of MK because we had discussed after the 2022 conference of the ANC very in-depth, as to what needs to be done, and we had various options, so this discussion took about 12 months.
When asked if he was part of the MK formation, he replied: “Absolutely”.
As reported by EWN, Mpofu has been Zuma’s legal counsel for a lot of his court cases and and has been part of MK briefs since its inception. He has often been seen on MK leadership podium
During the party’s regular appearances at the Electoral Court, Mpofu would often join the MK’s leadership on the podium, chanting party slogans and joining in song.
This despite him still holding an EFF membership at the time.
