Cape Town — African National Congress (ANC) chairperson and Gauteng Premier, Panyaza Lesufi, has that said his party should learn from Floyd Shivambu’s resignation from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
Shivambu shockingly announced his resignation from the EFF last week and decided to join Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
The MK Party announced that Shivambu, along with Mzwanele Manyi, would move into a role tailored to their specific strengths, and the party welcomed the appointment of two experienced political comrades.
Lesufi, who was speaking at an ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) Lekgotla, said there were great lessons to be learnt from Shivambu’s abrupt exit from the red berets, and said parties could learn from it on how to manage the youth within their parties, SABC News reported.
He said parties must have a generational mix, and that when members of a party clash, it collapses.
Lesufi called on the ANC to adopt this and said that, when there are opposing views, there should be senior leaders who can be called upon to restore order.
He also said that the ANC must adapt or face the risk of being wiped out.
Lesufi said the party needed to accept the results of the past election and begin a rebuilding phase.
“We either adapt or we perish, we either adapt or we die. We either adapt or we close shop. And comrades it is not going to assist anyone to finger point and say this province has made us lose, all of us average as a country we have achieved 40% and that’s a loss and we think of ourselves and rise and rebuild this movement because there is no other movement for us except the ANC,” he said.

According to The Citizen, Lesufi warned parties should not celebrate Shivambu’s EFF exit, and believes the ANC faces a similar problem. He said Shivambu’s move should not be seen as a non-entity, but an historic event that the leader of the ANC should analyse to strengthen its presence.
In light of his adaptable comments, Lesufi described the ANC as a sinking ship and said it was up to the current party members to save this ship as there is no other movement besides the ANC.
“The reality is that if the ANC goes, it is going to be very difficult for all of us to survive. And not to survive based on government things, but to survive because the strategic centre that paves the way for transformation and access would have been removed,” he said.
He said the ANC’s problems stem from governance and that the party should look at the individuals in charge who are assigned to handle big tasks. He said the PEC realised these officials are only officials by day and businessmen by night and have been captured by other institutions.
“We must draw the [line] in the sand now, that from now on, the power and the authority of government does not lie with officials, the power and authority of government lies with the African National Congress and the African National Congress will defend its right to exist,” Lesufi said.
PANYAZA LESUFI
The moment the ANC is removed from power and replaced by [a reactionary party like] the DA, just know that black people are going to feel the pain.
