Cape Town – Former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela has commented on the ANC’s decision to swear in former Sports, Arts, and Culture Minister Zizi Kodwa as an MP, despite his criminal charges.
Madonsela emphasised the ANC’s responsibility to reflect on the calibre of leaders it sends to Parliament.
“It’s now a matter of the party concerned that what is now their internal policy regarding who it sends to parliament,” Madonsela said during an interview with Newzroom Afrika.
She noted that the ANC, undergoing a renewal process, must ensure its representatives align with this commitment.
“The former governing party which could be a minority party if it chose to be has said it’s going through a renewal process and it’s up to them to ask questions are we sending people in parliament based on a commitment to a renewed organisation,” she said.
She added: “Mr Kodwa was not implicated in the state capture investigation that was ordered by myself. I do not believe that Mr Kodwa was charged with state capture,” Madonsela said.
Kodwa, charged with corruption unrelated to state capture, resigned as minister but returned as an MP, raising questions about the ANC’s step-aside rule.
The ANC stated that Kodwa will leave Parliament if convicted.
