Cape Town – The ANC has acknowledges the possibility of legal action from former President Jacob Zuma in response to the party’s decision to suspend him and expressed readiness to handle any legal challenges.
The party’s 87-member NEC made the unanimous decision to suspend Zuma on Monday, calling him a “counter-revolutionary” and a “reactionary”.
It likened him to rebel leaders from Angola and Mozambique.
Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said that Zuma’s suspension was due to his erratic behaviour, which had opened the party to danger.
“Can Zuma go to court? It’s possible. Tomorrow we can wake up with papers; it’s possible. The ANC should be ready to defend itself at all times against anyone who want to challenge ANC NEC decisions or ANC decisions, we will be ready to do that.
“So, it is very much possible that we can meet a court case that is challenging our decisions,” Mbalula said while speaking to the media at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
Zuma’s membership will remain suspended until the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings, and there is no decision on permanent expulsion yet.
Zuma had earlier announced his support for the Umkhonto weSizwe party, distancing himself from the ANC.
