Cape Town – Former member of the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, Mervyn Dirks, has been expelled from the party for joining the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party.
The expulsion was confirmed by a letter from provincial secretary Bheki Mtolo, citing a violation of ANC rules.
“This letter serves to inform you that you have been expelled from the African National Congress because you have joined another political party, contravening Rule 25.17.13 of the ANC. This action taken against you is admitted by yourself to the provincial secretary, who is the chief administrative officer of the organisation in the province.

“This means that your membership of the ANC is terminated with immediate effect, and you will no longer represent the ANC as a public representative in the KZN legislature,” read the letter.
The undeterred, Dirks said that the expulsion made him “feel good”.

He said he intended to rally support for the MK party, IOL reported.
“My only mission now is to mobilise votes for MK. I will not speak about any other political party,” said Dirks.
Reports indicated that this marked Dirks’ second clash with ANC rules, as he had resigned from the National Assembly in 2022 after a fallout with party leaders.
He had been suspended for “unbecoming” conduct and had sought to summon President Cyril Ramaphosa to answer allegations of mismanagement of public funds, said the reports.
