Cape Town – Former South African president Thabo Mbeki has called on the ruling African National Congress (ANC) leadership to ensure accountability.
Mbeki was speaking at a dialogue hosted by the ANC, with members from the business sector, held in Durban on Thursday.
He urged people to support the ANC and ensure that the party delivers on its promises.
“Personally, I would like that all of us as South Africans should really take up this matter with the ANC. Local government elections will take place on Monday, and then on Tuesday, we must go back to them to say this is what you promised in your manifesto. It’s not about an ANC victory, it’s about rescuing the country from this enormous crisis of poverty, unemployment, and inequality,” Mbeki said.

Mbeki said the ruling party needs to urgently address corruption within its ranks.
“One of the big challenges that we face is a serious problem of corruption, impacting across society on governance. I don’t think that we can debate that but it’s a matter that we must attend to. It has very direct relevance as all of us know to smatter about how our national resources are being managed and what has been done in terms of producing a governance system which truly addresses the interest of the people,” he said.
