Cape Town — Democratic Alliance (DA) leader, John Steenhuisen, fervently denied the allegations that the party supports Israel in the midst of the conflict in the Middle East.
Former DA Member of Parliament Ghaleb Cachalia, former DA youth leader Khume Ramulifho and former DA councillor Sammy Claassen resigned from the party after expressing concern over the treatment of pro-Palestine supporters in the party, SABC News reported.
During a live TV interview, when asked about the party’s stance, Steenhuisen simply said: “No, we don’t support Israel.”
“We have called for a two-state solution with an independent and sovereign and unoccupied Palestine living alongside a secure Israel that is the only way forward to bring about peace in the Middle East,” he added.
Steenhuisen said the party condemned Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments about a two-state solution.
“We have consistently said that human rights must be upheld, that the ICJ ruling must be upheld. We are not pro-Israel, we are not pro-Palestine, we are pro-peace and pro-anti-radicalisation on both sides.” he added.
Steenhuisen also spoke about the DA’s political manifesto and its plan to rescue South Africa from the grips of the ANC. From cutting red tape, to supporting small businesses, and ending load-shedding and corruption.
