Ramaphosa acknowledged that some ministers and deputy ministers, new to their roles, have faced challenges but are making significant progress.
“The members of the Executive have undertaken their work as part of a Cabinet collective. Although they are drawn from different parties, they have pursued the common GNU programme,” he said.
Ramaphosa also addressed the recent debate surrounding the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill.
While some GNU parties were divided on whether he should sign the bill, Ramaphosa stressed his constitutional duty to assent to it.
“The Constitution is quite clear on the responsibilities of the president with respect to signing legislation,” he said.
Despite signing the bill, he has allowed time for further discussion on contentious issues related to school admissions and language to foster dialogue among the parties.
Ramaphosa expressed confidence in the GNU’s future, saying: “Following the meeting of party leaders last week, I am even more convinced that the GNU is essential for the growth and development of the country.”
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the GNU succeeds in meeting South Africans’ expectations.
Ramaphosa urged a commitment to ongoing engagement and unity within the coalition.
“South Africans expect the GNU to succeed, and we will not let them down,” he assured.
