Cape Town – The South African Police Service (SAPS) is deploying additional Public Order Policing (POP) officers to KwaZulu-Natal and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape to enhance crime combatting efforts.
During a send-off parade in Harrismith, National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola instructed over 700 officers to ensure safe and secure voting conditions.
“We are sending you off to maintain law and order. No disruptions and acts of criminality should take place under your watch. We are sending you out there to protect the constitutional right of South Africans and the integrity of the election process,” said Masemola
The deployment aims to prevent criminal activities and uphold South Africans’ right to vote peacefully.
Five individuals were arrested for attempting to block roads to Mthatha Airport.
Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili emphasised the importance of lawful conduct in the officers’ duties.
