Cape Town – The South African Communist Party (SACP) is reportedly aiming to create a left-wing movement to challenge the Government of National Unity (GNU).
According to EWN, in its discussion documents for its upcoming special national conference, the SACP criticised the African National Congress (ANC) for its coalition with the Democratic Alliance (DA), describing it as a betrayal of its working-class policies.
The party argued that successive ANC governments have followed neo-liberal policies over the past 30 years.
The SACP intends to build a popular left front as an alternative to these policies, the report said.
This comes a few days after the party announced its decision to contest the 2026 Local Government Elections independently, breaking from its long-standing alliance with the ANC.
Speaking at the end of their Central Committee meeting, General-Secretary Solly Mapaila said that the specifics of the SACP’s independent campaign will be finalised at its 5th Special National Conference in two weeks.
