Cape Town – The South African Communist Party (SACP) says it will support a Government of National Unity (GNU) only if the Democratic Alliance (DA) is excluded.
SACP general secretary Solly Mapaila emphasised their refusal to work with the DA, calling them “anti-people forces”.
He proposed a coalition that consolidates a minority government led by the ANC, without involving the DA.

“We will not work with these forces, we will not support any idea to try and work with these forces,” Mapaila said.
Mapaila also opposed a coalition with the MKP due to its ties to factionalism and state capture.
He acknowledged the election results as a lesson and stressed the SACP’s commitment to advancing working-class interests and defending the ANC’s position despite its failure to secure a majority.

The ANC said on Wednesday it had reached out to rivals to form a government of national unity, after failing to win an outright majority in last week’s general election.
The final tally gave the ANC 159 members in the 400-seat National Assembly, its lowest score in a general election.
According to AFP, ANC spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri told reporters the party held “explorative” talks with several others, as it attempts to secure enough parliamentary support to form a government and elect a president.
Its decision making body was to meet on Thursday to vet all options, including trying to form a minority government, she said.
But the conversation was focusing “on a government of national unity because this is what the people of South Africa said to us”, she said.

“We have been meeting with all parties that are keen to contribute ideas on how we can collectively move our country forward and form a government that ensures national unity and stability,” said Bengu-Motsiri.
Among those consulted were parties with radically different agendas, such as the DA, EFF and the Inkatha Freedom Party.
