Cape Town – President Cyril Ramaphosa says the country has submitted all necessary documents to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to file a complaint against Israel for war crimes related to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The conflict, which has lasted for two months, has resulted in the deaths of nearly 20 000 Palestinians and at least 1 200 people in Israel.
Ramaphosa, along with other nations, has urged the ICC to investigate Israel for war crimes.
The president emphasised the need for urgency in the ICC’s response, particularly given the increasing loss of Palestinian lives in the West Bank, EWN reported.
Meanwhile, South Africans fighting for Israel in Gaza could face prosecution at home, the government warned on Monday.
The International Relations & Cooperation ministry said it was “gravely concerned” by reports that some South African nationals have joined the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) to fight in Gaza, or are considering doing so.
“Such action can potentially contribute to the violation of international law and the commission of further international crimes, thus making them liable for prosecution in South Africa,” the ministry said, according to AFP.
