Cape Town — President Cyril Ramaphosa has called on opposition parties to allow the legal processes to be followed when it comes to the current issues surrounding Parliament speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
Mapisa-Nqakula has endured a long week in the headlines as she had her home raided by the Hawks, she took a special leave of absence from work, and was later arrested, all on allegations of a R2.3 million bribe she solicited from a former military contractor.
There have been an increasing number of calls for her resignation, Ramaphosa, who was on an Eastern Cape campaign trail, has called for patience with with various law enforcement agencies as they continue with their investigation.
“They raided her house, she hasn’t been charged yet. She has said that she will take special leave and there’s a process that’s unfolding. As I’ve always said, we have processes, we have institutions, we have well-geared and independent institutions and in the end we must rely on those institutions to do their work.” Ramaphosa said.
We have processes. We have well-geared and independent institutions and we must allow them the space and the opportunity to do their work. The Speaker has already indicated that she is cooperating with the process. pic.twitter.com/njdbLBQcYP

“When we give them space and the opportunity to do their work, then we will be successful. As far as I am concerned, the Speaker herself has said that she is cooperating. That in itself must say something to all of us.” he added.
“We’re dealing here with allegations that have been made, with a Speaker who says she’s cooperating and from a governance point of view, she said I’m taking special leave and the process must then unfold. It’s already known that when it reaches a particular point, certain actions need to be taken. There’s no running away from that.” he continued
“The matter is being handled, let’s give the institutions that are handling this matter the space to handle this matter. I am certain that the rule of law and processes of handling things like these in our country will prevail, so let’s allow that to happen.” he concluded.
Defenceweb editor Guy Martin says National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has had several allegations of corruption made against her in the past, but it is up to the prosecutors and investigators to prove these.
