Cape Town – As South Africa celebrates 31 years of freedom, President Cyril Ramaphosa, who is battling the flu, will rest and miss the national Freedom Day event in Ermelo, Mpumalanga.
“President Ramaphosa is unable to officiate this engagement as he is being treated for flu and has been advised to rest for this to clear,” the presidency said in a statement on Sunday.
“The President wishes the nation well on this Freedom Day, which marks the conclusion of the observance of 30 years of freedom and democracy in South Africa.”

Acting President Gwede Mantashe will deliver the keynote address under the theme “United in Resilience for the Defence of Our Freedom and Democracy.”
The ANC described 27 April 1994 as a significant milestone, marking the first democratic elections where all South Africans could vote.
This year’s Freedom Day is also the first after forming the national coalition government (GNU).
