Cape Town – A group of political parties is seeking the intervention of Chief Justice Raymond Zondo to assist in forming a Government of National Unity (GNU) following the 2024 elections.
President Cyril Ramaphosa revealed the plan after negotiations within the ANC.
Parties like Mmusi Maimane’s Build One South Africa (Bosa), African Transformation Movement (ATM), and United Democratic Movement (UDM) have requested Zondo to convene a meeting with all National Assembly parties to discuss the GNU agenda.
Bosa emphasised the need for a clear and agreed-upon agenda before committing to the GNU, mentioning principles like the rule of law and economic reform.

“The purpose of this meeting is to decide on the agenda of any Government of National Unity, which is the preferred option of the biggest party in South Africa, the ANC.
“Unity is not a buzzword. If we are to build unity in government, then the actual negotiation process must demonstrate unity and good faith to all 60 million South Africans,” Bosa said in a statement on Friday.
The party said that an acceptable GNU should be founded on several key principles such as adherence to the rule of law, upholding constitutionalism, ensuring justice and redress, fostering a mixed economy that generates employment, eliminating crime and corruption, and reforming the education system.

Bosa also joined the other five parties requested a meeting with Zondo to discuss the GNU.
The parties, including the UDM, BOSA, ACDP, ATM, PAC, and UAT, sought to engage the Chief Justice to address their concerns regarding the proposal.
“Given the new terrain where no one party has an outright mandate to form a government, it is imperative that a critical meeting be convened promptly. This meeting must serve as a platform for fostering a transparent collaborative agenda for South Africa, ” the parties said in a statement.
However, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) rejected the GNU proposal, favouring coalitions with like-minded parties instead, citing historical failures of such arrangements.
