Cape Town — The future of National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, hangs in the balance after her name was left off the African National Congress’s (ANC) candidate list for the 2024 elections.
Mapisa-Nqakila has had to deal with a host of corruption allegations against her after she was accused of hiking the salary of Parliament’s secretary, with opposition parties calling for her to resign.
She then also revealed her plans to retire, following the conclusion of the elections, and joins a list of 30 other ANC members who plan to do so, including Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, and Minister of International Relations, Naledi Pandor.
According to EWN, she joins a strong list of candidates excluded from the ANC’s national list such as deputy speaker Lechesa Tsenoli and house chairpersons Cedric Frolick, Grace Boroto and Madala Ntombela.
Mapisa-Nqakula’s spokesperson Mike Ramagoma said it was for the ANC, and not Mapisa-Nqakula to explain her exclusion from the list.
She could however still be nominated for Parliament on the so-called province to national list, representing the Eastern Cape.
Speaker of Parliament, Ms Mapisa-Nqakula, is facing allegations of soliciting and receiving over R2.3M in cash bribes during her tenure as defense minister. The Investigating Directorate has conducted a 6 month investigation into the matter, and an arrest is reportedly imminent.
