Cape Town — As the Government of National Unity (GNU) continues to grow, there have been calls for the parties to hold President Cyril Ramaphosa accountable in the Phala Phala saga.
The GNU has now grown to 10 parties after the Al-Jama-ah and Rise Mzansi recently joined the GNU, meaning the African National Congress (ANC), Demacratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance (PA), Good Party, Pan African Congress (PAC), United Democratic Movement (UDM) and Freedom Front Plus (FF+) now comprise the GNU.
The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has called on all the parties within the GNU to keep Ramaphosa accountable until a decision has been made regarding his Phala Phala scandal, with OUTA CEO, Wayne Duvenhage, said that no one was above the law, EWN reported.
“Anybody who is implicated to some glaring extent, as has been with the president and some of the others, needs to be investigated but independently, and with forensic investigations that are going to give us facts.”
Public Protector Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka cleared President Ramaphosa of wrongdoing in the complaint against him, over the handling of the housebreaking and theft at his private Phala Phala farm in 2022.

OUTA has also made calls for some ministers to not make a return to their roles within the GNU, namely Blade Nzimande, Sindiswe Chikunga and Gwede Mantashe.
“We’ve done a lot of work, investigations with whistleblowers, particularly with those three ministries. It is so obvious to us that Gwede Mantashe should not be heading up the DMRE going forward,” Duvenhage said.
OUTA has also called for Ministers Angie Motshekga and Bheki Cele to stay out of power come the time to announce the new cabinet. Duvenage points out that Cele’s performance in the police ministry and minister Angie Motshekga’s tenure in basic education have been grossly inadequate, The Citizen reported.
OUTA called for the new ministers to take up the President’s call to engage with civil society and find solutions for the many challenges the country faces.
