Cape Town — The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (OUTA) has expressed its concern over the impending appointment of Dada Morero as Johannesburg mayor, following Kabelo Gwamanda’s resignation.
After weeks of speculation about Gwamanda’s future as Johannesburg mayor, he resigned amid calls from opposition parties who blamed him for the poor service delivery, the deteriorating infrastructure and the overall poor state of the city.
According to the African National Congress’s (ANC) regional secretary in Johannesburg, Sasabonga Manganye, Morero is the party’s sole nominee and is expected to take over his new role on Friday, which will take place in a special sitting, IOL reported.
Manganye was confident that Morero would be the one to turn Johannesburg’s fortunes around, and was confident he would fix the issues plaguing the city, including the water crisis, power outages and strained finances.
He said the people would be happy because Morero is one of the ANC’s best options, which will inspire confidence in the residents and ensure service delivery is accelerated.
This would mark Morero’s second tenure as Johannesburg mayor after he was elected to the role in September 2022 after the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mpho Phalatse, was removed through a vote of no confidence.

According to EWN, OUTA’s CEO, Wayne Duvenhage, said in an interview with Bongani Bingwa that it was disappointed with Morero’s appointment and suggested that his tenure as the MEC of Finance has not instilled confidence in addressing Johannesburg’s financial issues.
He said the changes in Johannesburg will depend on who takes over as the new mayor and said Morero has worsened the situation in Johannesburg by opting for R2.5 billion loan.
“We don’t see any joy coming out of Dada Morero’s appointment, and if we don’t get the right visionary leadership that is going to steer the city in the direction it needs to go, we can’t see where the leadership is going to come from,” Duvenhage said.
