Cape Town — South Africa’s new ministers were officially sworn-in on Wednesday and now the focus shifts to how each minister will address the the key priorities in each department.
Chief Justice Raymond Zondo had the responsiilty of swearing-in deputy president, Paul Mashatile, along with the 32 ministers and 43 deputies. The ministers are officially part of the Government of National Unity (GNU) which is comprised of seven different political parties.
Among the new ministers sworn-in included Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader, Gayton McKenzie as Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Democratic Alliance (DA) elader, John Steenhuisen as Minister of Agriculture, DA’s Siviwe Gwarube as Minister of Education, Inkatha Freedom Party’s (IFP) Velenkosini Hlabisa as Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).
According to EWN, some new ministers highlighted the priorities within their departments, including Freedom Front Plus (FF+) leader, Pieter Groenewald (Minister of Correctional Services) will priortise corruption.
“The priorities of course is corruption, rehabilitation, and I also think that when it comes to privatisation, I first want to get everything on the table.” he said.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, meanwhile, said that she would make sure that Ramaphosa received adequate support to deliver as the head of the GNU.
“As designated minister in the Presidency, I will make sure that we support the president to deliver and the Cabinet collective to deliver.”
