Cape Town – Dr Naledi Pandor, who has served as a Member of Parliament since 1994, is stepping down from her government position, drawing praise from around the world.
She will not return to Parliament for the seventh administration. In February, Pandor hinted at her retirement during an ANC event, saying she would not hold public office after serving as the International Relations and Cooperation Minister since 2019.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Ronald Lamola as her successor.
Pandor is lauded for her principled leadership, intellect, and contributions in various ministerial roles, including science and technology, home affairs, and education.
Her daughter, Dr Aisha Pandor, honoured her on social media, highlighting her dedication and integrity.
“My mom has been an ANC member and activist for all of my life. I share a birthday with the ANC, and for most of my life, I proudly spent Jan 8th with other family or friends, while my parents served the party. Since I was almost 9 years old, she has served as a member of South Africa’s democratic government.

“During those three decades, she has led with dedication, integrity, intelligence, wisdom, a love for her country, and a focus on principles, those held high by her religion, upbringing, country and party.
“Yesterday I told her for the countless time, how much I love her, how much she inspires me and how proud I am of her. I’m excited for this next stage in her life, which I know will be anything but idle. It will undoubtedly be focussed on creating positive impact and on continuing to champion the causes of the underserved, voiceless and powerless.
“I’m also hoping that as by far the most hardworking person I’ve ever met, she finally takes a bit of well-deserved time for rest. Very proud and grateful daughter, and hopeful for SA. May our country and people be blessed with peace, unity, growth and prosperity,” Dr Aisha wrote.
Pandor is also celebrated for her advocacy for Palestine and her role in securing the Square Kilometre Array telescope for South Africa.
She received a Lifetime Achievement award in 2022 and is praised for her servant leadership by colleagues and international diplomats.
