Cape Town — The Democratic Alliance (DA) have officially completed its campaign trail and party leader, John Steenhuisen, has urged voters to get behind the Multi-Party Charter (MPC).
As the leader of South Africa’s main opposition party, Steenhuisen has been outspoken over the African National Congress (ANC)’s failure to save the country from the pitfalls of corruption, poverty and unemployment. He believes the MPC is the key to overthrowing the ruling party, The Citizen reported.
“For the first time, the DA has a clear pathway into national government,” he said. “By uniting with our partners inside the Multi-Party Charter, we have pooled together the biggest bloc of opposition votes since 1994. Together we can get to the 50% plus one we need to rescue South Africa,” he said.
There are currently eight parties that comprise the MPC, namely the DA, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Freedom Front Plus, ActionSA, Independent South African National Civic Organisation, United Independent Movement and Spectrum National Party.
Steenhuisen called on South Africans to rewrite the next chapter in the country’s history as they cast their votes on Wednesday, and said these elections will mark the end of the ANC’s reign.

“The ANC will lose the outright majority it has abused for decades to subject the people to unemployment, corruption and misrule. We will close the ANC chapter of our history. And a new chapter will begin.” he said.
According to EWN, Steenhuisen was speaking at the DA’s final election campaign at Willowmoore Stadium in Benoni on Sunday and he painted a bleak picture of what the future would look like should the ANC stay in charge.
“If we sit back and allow a coalition between the African National Congress (ANC)-Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), and uMkhonto weSizwe party aided by the sellouts in the Patriotic Alliance, our tomorrow will be far worse than yesterday.” he said.
“Because if that happens, the NHI [National Health Insurance] will be implemented, property will be expropriated, and corruption engulf us… It will be doomsday for South Africa.” he concluded.
