Cape Town – MPs are urging Parliament to resolve the issue of a makeshift “dome” to host all physical plenary sittings before the year’s end.
The EFF, among other parties, is pushing for a return to fully physical sessions, EWN reported.
Parliament initially suggested using the dome structure from Madiba’s funeral in Qunu as a temporary chamber, but no final decision has been made yet.
“Last week Friday, I held a meeting with the Minister of @DepartmentPWI to explore the possibility of getting a dome that has been used by the state for big events previously, like the funeral of late President Mandela. In July, MPs held their first session in a tent on a parking lot near Parliament, as no venue could accommodate 400 members after a fire two years ago.
EFF MP Natasha Ntlangwini emphasised the need for a committed venue for all MPs, including for the upcoming medium-term budget policy statement (MTBPS).
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has been working with Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson to bring the dome to Cape Town.
According to Times Live, Didiza acknowledged in July that since the start of the seventh parliament, space limitations have hindered committees from conducting business effectively.
“While we have tried to improve, this remains a challenge we must address. The availability of space for offices of members is another point we must address, she said.
