Tshwane — Following the appointment of ActionSA’s Nasiphi Moya as the new Tshwane mayor, outgoing mayor and DA councillor, Cilliers Brink, said she would be a mayor of an ANC and EFF alliance.
Brink was ousted as Tshwane mayor following a motion of no confidence but vowed to fight back against those who wanted him gone. Following ActionSA’s split from the Tshwane coalition, Brink faced an uphill battle to regain control of Tshwane.
Moya beat Brink by 122 votes to 86 and following the outcome of the results, Brink delivered a speech on the DA’s plan for the future.
Brink lamented the ANC and EFF for bringing down an effective coalition in Tshwane and believes Moya’s appointment was a plot to hide the “reunification of the ANC in Gauteng and the radical economic factions of the party”.
“We gave the ANC every opportunity to avoid what happened today, but it appeared that it could not rise above its internal divisions to act in the best interests of the people of Tshwane. Since losing the mayoralty in Tshwane in 2016, the ANC has made every effort to prevent any other party from governing the city with success,” he said.
Brink added that the ANC has repeatedly prevented council meetings from taking place as it tried to gain power again but often caused greater disruptions to the city.
“After playing saboteurs in the city for the past eight years, the ANC and EFF will now be held responsible for governing the city. These parties must not think they can get away and blame their failures on their proxy mayor.”
“Nasiphi Moya will be an ANC-EFF mayor. ActionSA, polling at just 0.5% nationally, have now played their hand to these parties, having delivered Tshwane into their hands,” he added.
Brink said Moya, who served as Brink’s deputy, would have success if she stuck to the plan of action the DA outlined, and the party would support her if she did so.
“Given the power dynamics in Tshwane, we suspect the ANC-EFF coalition will try to take apart the initiatives we’ve taken,” he said.
The DA said that it would work with like-minded parties while in opposition to prevent any initiatives from being reversed, while also preventing non-political senior managers removed from posts.
The party issued a warning over Tshwane’s finances and said financial rescue is at the heart of bringing service delivery to all the people of Tshwane.
“I want to emphasise, the ANC and EFF will not be able to blame their bad decisions on anyone else, including their proxy mayor,” he added.
🔴 The DA’s aim is not to abandon the people of Tshwane. Our ultimate goal is to return to governance to continue the work that we have started in the City. This fight is far from over and we will not stop fighting.#SaveTshwane pic.twitter.com/dzR6BndPXX
