Cape Town – ANC’s first deputy secretary-general, Nomvula Mokonyane, has cautioned supporters against confusion with the newly-formed uMkhonto weSizwe party.
She said that the ANC remains distinct.
The new party, supported by former president Jacob Zuma, claims to address issues within the ANC.
According to Times Live, Mokonyane, a known Zuma ally, criticised the breakaway party, saying that true ANC members would have stayed to resolve internal problems.
She highlighted the ANC’s commitment to renewal and unity, urging members to remain loyal.
“We all agree we’ve had our issues, we’ve made mistakes and that’s why we are talking about renewal and unity. You can’t talk about renewal if there’s nothing to renew, you renew because you know there are problems.

“You can’t talk about unity because we’ve fought here at home but when there’s problems at home you don’t leave, you stay at home and discuss your issues, no-one leaves their home,” the report quoted Mokonyane as saying while speaking to party supporters in Hazyview, Mpumalang.
Last week, ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the party did not have a personal agenda against Zuma and that it was not threatened by his endorsement of the newly formed Umkhonto weSizwe party.
Zuma has been campaigning for the MK party, seen by many as a breakaway faction of the ANC.
Mbalula said that the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) was yet to decide on Zuma’s fate and emphasised resolving party issues within the ANC.
“Our constitution is very clear, there is no two parties. There is no party called MK existing in our name through somebody who wants to be a saviour of the party or a messiah. There is no such a thing.

“In the ANC you resolve your issues in the party. We have had difficulties over time through different epochs and transition and all of that. So, this thing is not new. When people who were disgruntled and not happy with President Zuma, they went to form Cope. When people don’t agree with President Ramaphosa, they form MK,” said Mbalula.
