Cape Town – President of the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party, Jacob Zuma, has appointed former public protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane as the convener for Mpumalanga, signaling a significant shift in the party’s provincial leadership.
The party made the announcement in a statement on Thursday.
This move is expected to address internal challenges and stabilise the party ahead of the 2026 local government elections.
Mkhwebane, who is anticipated to lead with “integrity and dedication”, will fill the leadership gap left by former provincial leader Mary Phadi.

The appointment follows a tumultuous period marked by allegations against Phadi, including hiring hitmen and misappropriating funds, leading to her dismissal and legal battles.
Zuma also appointed additional members to fill leadership positions in the province, in accordance with the MKP’s constitution
Charles Masombuka was appointed the deputy convener. Other key appointments include AB Mkhatshwa as the coordinator, Dr. Nelisiwe Msibi as the deputy coordinator, Skhwameni Nkuna as the organiser, Njabulo KaChibi as the deputy organiser, Donald Maphanga as the fundraiser, and Mbalenhle Masinga as the deputy fundraiser.
